ALEX FERGUSON: MANAGING MY LIFE
Love him or loathe him, one has to admit that the story of the lad from the working class background who made
it to the pinnacle of football management makes compulsive reading. In his own words Ferguson tells how he,
the son of a Glasgow shipbuilder, overcame such disadvantaged early years to achieve the unparalleled success
of last season's Treble. This frank and passionate story tells how Ferguson has relied on the support of
those close to him to overcome the pressures of football management at the top. The book contains many
interesting anecdotes and candid views on those with whom he has worked over the years. Don't expect much in
the way of football tactics or punditry from Sir Alex, this book is about Ferguson the man. Recommended.

ROTHMANS FOOTBALL YEARBOOK: 1999-2000
The fact that this is the 30th anniversary edition of this famous footballing "bible" pays
testimony to its enduring appeal. The book bulges with facts, figures and information about players, clubs
and matches in the English and Scottish Leagues. In addition to the usual review of the past season a new 10
year form guide for English clubs is included. The book reflects on the highlights and lowlights of the
previous season and this year's "Viewpoint" comes from top Premiership referee, David Elleray who
makes a plea on behalf of his much maligned colleagues. Always a big seller amongst football books.

NICK HORNBY: FEVER PITCH
From the age of eleven Nick Hornby developed not an interest but an obsession with the game of football. This
book is a superb account of his experiences as a fan whose entire existence revolved around the game and his
beloved team, Arsenal. With great humour and frankness Hornby provides a brilliant insight into football
culture over two decades and tells how his personal life has been affected by the game he loves. Hardly any
football matter remains uncovered including social issues such as terrace violence and football's effect upon
his family life. If any football book ever captured the essence of being a fan this is it. A "must
read" for any serious soccer fan.

COLIN SHINDLER: MANCHESTER UNITED RUINED MY LIFE
As a young Jewish boy growing up in 1960's Manchester, Colin Shindler's formative years were never easy. A
life long Manchester City fan, he tells us what its like to be on the other side of the fence as City's more
illustrious neighbours, United, enjoyed the greater footballing success. His experiences have inevitably lead
to a dislike of all things United, especially the unashamed commercialisaton of the Old Trafford team.
Despite lamenting his club's journey into the football wilderness there are some funny and ironic moments,
such as when the City fans chant "Are you watching Macclesfield?". A book for United haters
everywhere.

TONY ADAMS: ADDICTED
Tony Adams has for many years been considered as one of the best defenders in England. However life at the
top has often been far from glamourous for the Arsenal player. As the title suggests the book concentrates
largely on Adams' battle against the bottle. Despite the setbacks of a jail term for drink driving and then,
as he was undergoing a rehabilitation process, marital problems he remains a top class international player.
Adams writes frankly about his addiction and also about his experiences when working with some of the games
best managers and players. A great read for Arsenal and England fans alike.

WINNERS AND LOSERS: THE BUSINESS STRATEGY OF FOOTBALL
To many of us football is just a game, however to those involved in the running of a modern club it is also a
business. In this book the authors, Stefan Szymanski and Tim Kuypers, analyse the relationship between
various clubs' achievements on the field and their business strategy. This analysis is based on a vast
collection of data regarding clubs financial policies. The book also includes some interesting stories
showing how money and football have been inextricably linked from its earliest days. It would be of interest,
not only to the football fan, but to those interested in business strategy generally.

GLENN HODDLE: THE WORLD CUP 1998 STORY
England's indifferent performance in the 1998 World Cup is now history. Live again the euphoria of Michael
Owen's wonder goal and the despair of David Batty's penalty miss as seen through the eyes of England's former
manager. This, more importantly, is also the untold story of the events that unfolded behind the scenes and
of Hoddle's often eccentric approach. He uses the book to defend such decisions as the omission from the
squad of Paul Gascoigne and the use of faith healer Eileen Drewery. This is Hoddle's chance to have his say
to those who have passed judgement; read this book before you pass yours.
