How Search Engines Work
When you submit your site to a search engine it will use an automated "robot" (known as a Spider) to view the site and record its contents on its database. The spider will probably revisit your page every few months to update this information. Your site's contents are used by the search engine to decide if your site will be listed when a person performs a search using a specific keyword or phrase. To be near the top of the list your page must achieve a high rating or "relevancy mark".
Your relevancy mark is determined by a number of factors, mostly relating to the content of your page. It is therefore important that such content (both visible and invisible) is optimized to achieve the best rating. Unfortunately, each search engine has its own priorities in assessing a page's relevancy mark so it is a complicated task to create a page that will perform well in all the search engines.
Spamming
Spamming is the overuse of keywords, phrases, doorways etc. in an attempt to increase a page's search engine rating. All the search engines have strict limitations on this practice and will heavily penalise offending sites. It is therefore very important to know how to limit repetition and avoid this pitfall.
How Search Engine Optimization is Achieved
To produce a web page with a high search engine rating the following main items must be considered:
1. Visible site content
This is the text that the visitor sees when he/she views the page. The content and the way in which the first few sentences are displayed is of prime importance.2. Invisible Site Content
This includes the Title, Meta, Alt and Comment tags. Simply cramming these tags with your keywords will be counter productive so a measured approach is required.3. Link Popularity
Increasingly, search engines will rank your site higher if you have a large number of external links to your page. They consider this to be an indication of an established site that is popular with other Internet users.4. Doorway Pages
"Doorways" are pages that are designed specifically to achieve a high search engine rating, but they must be use judiciously to avoid spamming. They usually have little content and link only to the site's home page but can be very effective if constructed correctly. External doorways also improve your link popularity.5. Submission to Search Engines
Once your site is complete and its content optimized it is important that you notify all the major search engines of its existence. It can take a few months for many search engines to fully review and record your site so it can take a while for improvements in traffic to take effect.
