An approximate History of the Millfield Cup.

I can remember it as if it was only yesterday. It was a cold, dark afternoon late in 1996 when I took the young Johnny Egan upon my knee and told him the news. He, I, Steve and a man called Mulligan would be travelling to a far off place and would compete for something called .... The Millfield Cup. Johnny's legs began to swing, his arms flapped in excitement and it was obvious that he realised, even then, that this was to be something big.

What are the handicaps?..can I do them?...can I bring my arrows? were just a few of the flurry of questions. I had the answers, I'd been there. Stories ensued of log cabins, fluffy ducklings, the sixteenth green and, of course, sizzling Thai chicken.

Since that prophetic day fifteen men, young and old, have made the annual pilgrimage to test their finely tuned golf swings in pursuit of the famous silverware. Inevitably, most have failed and ALL have turned to drink but still they come back for more!

There are just five contented souls, set apart from the rest, who know what its like to raise aloft the Millfield Cup. They tell me that you cannot describe the elation. I asked Mulley, the legendary three times winner, to explain the feeling and was scarcely surprised to discover that even he was not able to find the words.

Records are sketchy but carbon dating of the surviving archive of score cards and fixture sheets has enabled us to piece together the following competitor list through the years. I think that its correct but if you know better speak up and change golfing history for ever.
